Running is usually both relaxing and energizing for me. I don’t run along with headphones—no music, no podcasts, no audiobooks—and I rarely run with a group. Therefore , for twenty to 40 miles a week, it is just myself, my thoughts, and the open trail (or a good Characteristic movie if I’m in the treadmill). It alleviates continuous thinking and the unrelenting feeling that something needs to be completed, and of course, it gives me a split from writing. If I’m not having fun when running—no matter the mileage with no matter my time—I’m carrying it out wrong.  

For me, writing is like working: if I’m not having fun, I’m doing it wrong.
